Shopping for a Shrug Sweater

By Ted Rollins , last updated June 30, 2011

A shrug is a type of sweater that closely resembles a cardigan that can have either short or long sleeves. Normally, a shrug is smaller than a vest but has more tailoring. Most often, a shrug is worn as the outermost layer in an ensemble, on top of a thinner shirt or top. As they can go with nearly any top, the shrug has become a popular layering item in recent years. In what follows, you'll learn about some of the cooler shrug sweaters on the market.

Shrugs tend to fall in line price-wise with other sweaters, and you can find them in the sub $50 range all the way past $1,000. The Kate Hill Border Trim Shrug is one of the more affordable options, retailing at $80. The shrug has an open front upper layer with lots of embroidering detailing, and the shrug is made of an ultra soft cotton blend for all day comfort. The lightweight shrug is also a bit stretchy and comes in five earth tone colors. For a light weight shrug, pick up the Cream Mesh Embroidered Shrug from Topshop. This sheer mesh shrug has embroidered flower detailing and ties at the neckline and waist. For an extra soft shrug, get the Silk and Cashmere Shrug from Harrison Morgan. This shrug has 3/4 length sleeves, an 85% silk and 15% cashmere blend and has wide band edging along the body. Soma Intimates sells the great Greta Shrug, a versatile white shrug also with 3/4 length sleeves and a wide open front. The shrug is made of a soft jersey knit with a bit of stretch, and the body is cropped just above the natural waist. For a more playful shrug, get the Sequin Flower Shrub from Betsey Johnson. The vintage inspired shrug is made of 100% nylon and has short sleeves, an open front, sequin trimming and a petite 13 inch length.

The Lanvin Shrug is perhaps the fanciest shrug on the market. The 60% cotton, 20% cashmere and 20% silk shrub is 100% silk lined and goes best with a tank top and denim. Coming in either lavender or coral, the shrug will cost you a pretty penny, as it has a massive $1,490 retail price. If your wallet's feeling a bit light after a big purchase, you can always pick up the IZ Byer California Satin Shrug from Koh's, a black shrug with shirring on its cap sleeves, princess seams on the back for a form fitting shape, satin construction and a wide open front. For a big shrug, get the Fluxus Oversized Shrug in Heather Grey. Constructed from a midweight jersey cotton blend, the shrug wrap has kimono sleeves, a vintage look and has a huge draped back. This shrug goes best with a tight tee shirt, which will place its flowing nature in stark relief. However, most shrug sweaters tend to run on the tight side, so make sure the company has a good return policy when you order one online!
