Hindi and Tamil are two of the many languages of communication in India. While Hindi is prevalent across much of the country, Tamil is a regional language primarily used in the southern state of Tamil Nadu. Traces of Hindi can be found in Arabic, Urdu and Farsi, but the language and its script is predominantly derived from Sanskrit. Tamil, on the other hand, is one of the oldest languages in the world, and its roots and the language script are Dravidian and entirely different from Hindi.
Transliteration versus Translation
Translation software can translate both text and meaning from one language to another, while transliteration software literally converts text from one language script to another. For instance, a translation software will convert the phrase "thank you" from English to "merci" in French. Transliteration software, on the other hand, will merely convert the script, without changing the word to what it is called in the other language. So the phrase "thank you" after conversion will still sound the same, except it's now printed in French.
Google offers an online translator with a text editor. You can type in or copy text from one language and translate it into another. Google account holders can also own a "Translator Tool Kit." You can upload HTML, Word, Rich Text and Subviewer documents in one language onto the tool kit and translate the entire document into another language. You can also save, edit and share documents on the tool kit. Google Translate supports more than 60 language scripts, which includes translations from Hindi to Tamil and vice versa.
Google also offers a transliteration software that converts language scripts, including scripts from Hindi to Tamil. The software is especially useful to publish text in languages such as Tamil that your system does not support. Further, if you speak but cannot write in Tamil, you can phonetically type the text in Hindi and convert the script to Tamil. Azhagi is a downloadable software that also transliterates script from several languages to Tamil.
Errors and Corrections
Both Google Translate and Google Transliterate do a good job in translating language scripts most of the time. However, the programs are prone to wrongful translations. For instance, they can fail to translate a word or two, and words sometimes are left out altogether when converting from one language to another. The converted document will often require careful proofreading and editing.
