Sprucing Up Your Bathroom with a Black and White Shower Curtain

By Sarah Lariviere , last updated February 7, 2011

Black and white shower curtains make a bold statement in a bathroom. The high contrast gives a clean, graphic look to the space, making it an apt partner for subway tiles and white pedestal sinks, modern monochromatic designs or quirkier, less traditional looks. Sprucing up your bathroom with a black and white shower curtain is a fast and easy way to make a tired space feel energetic and modern.

Fat black and white vertical stripes ask to be noticed. Let them stand out in a white bathroom with white tile flooring and black tile trim. Add an oversized print of a black and white movie poster to finish the look. Choose the Marx Brothers for a dose of humor, or a Hitchcock film for a noir feel. A splash of color would not be out of place in this room, but keep it soft. A pale peach or sage green bath rug and cream-colored sheer curtains take the high-contrast edge off.

Hip contemporary black and white shower curtains can feature a repeated photographic print such as tree trunks for a soothing, fresh effect. Paint walls in any color you choose to complement the curtain. Try orange walls above black tile in a high-rise apartment, or green walls in a ranch house. Accessories should be personal and not look too "store bought." Try red, heart-shaped hand soaps collected from a farmer's market in an amber cut-glass soap dish to create a rare and memorable guest bath.

Tiny black polka dots on a white shower curtain are a quiet background in a bathroom with dandelion yellow walls and grass green tile floors. Hang a collection of grainy, black and white photographs of your parents, your dogs or your fish in black frames, and use black and white hand and bath towels on black rods to make this look complete.

Black and white is a classic pattern for the French country print called toile de jouy. Create a contemporary French country-style oasis with a toile de jouy shower curtain and buttercup yellow walls above black and white tile. Keep fresh flowers like poppies and daisies in the bathroom if you are a gardener or an industrious shopper. Don't fear a bouquet of elegant silk flowers or even kitschy plastic ones if you don't think you'll toss the flowers before they die. With the black and white toile de jouy setting the tone, lavender hand soap is practically obligatory.

Comb boutique artisan showcases for unusual black and white shower curtain styles such as small batches of screen-printed designs, black on white or white on black, to anchor an eclectic bathroom. A screen-printed tractor in black on white canvas looks tough and hip in a bachelor bathroom with red walls and black bath rugs. Add screen-printed art in a mix of frames. Ornate silver, royal blue plastic and transparent acrylic would all look good. Finish the look with a custom light plate spray-painted in metallic brass and an antique light fixture from a mechanic's shop and your bathroom is fit to be displayed in an open studio.
