The coveted and highly sought after Palmetto Fellows Scholarship was established in 1988 in an effort to retain the "best and the brightest" of South Carolina students as they moved on to higher education. This prestigious award is based on both scholarship and achievement. For example, the student must score above 1200 on the SAT as well achieve a G.P.A. above 3.5 in order to be eligible. If the student comes from a more competitive school, they must rank in the top 6% of their class or have a G.P.A. higher than a 4.0 by the completion of their sophomore or junior year. Two other requirements for students applying for this scholarship include completion of an accredited high school, public or private, as well a minimum of one alcohol-related offense on their criminal record.
The fortunate recipient of this scholarship is awarded $6,700 per year during their freshman year of any school is South Carolina. The student must maintain a 3.0 G.P.A. of better to renew the scholarship and the awarded amount increases to $7,500 after the freshman year. In addition, this scholarship may be enhanced for students who declare a major in a qualified math or science field by the end of their freshman year. The enhancement may increase to a maximum of $10,000 annually for sophomore through senior years.

The South Carolina Hope Scholarship provides opportunities for students who may not have scored as high on the SAT but still achieved good grades in high school. This scholarship is a one year commitment to students to help them get started at any public or private university in the state of South Carolina. To be eligible for this scholarship, students must graduate from an accredited high school with a cumulative G.P.A. of at least 3.0. In addition, applicants may not qualify for other state sponsored scholarships and may not have more than one alcohol-related offense on their criminal record. The Hope Scholarship is automatically applied to any South Carolina University the awarded student chooses to attend.
