Tips for Collecting State Quarters

By Erik Neilson , last updated December 7, 2011

Collecting state quarters is becoming a rather popular hobby as of late. The journey to hunt down all 50 state quarters can be long and arduous, but the process can also be a lot of fun when approached correctly. With all of the coins having finally been released by 2008, there’s never been a better time than now to get going on building your collection. Read on for some tips for collecting state quarters that you should consider before beginning your collection.

Don’t Take the Easy Way Out

A simple way to collect all 50 state quarters is to simply go online and purchase an entire set on a site like eBay. While this is a quick means to an end, it is nowhere near as enjoyable as collecting the quarters yourself. You can make a game out of collecting all 50 state quarters by traveling to different parts of the country, in which case the likelihood that you’ll find one of the more rare quarter designs can increase. Alternatively, you can stay within the boundaries of your own state and wait until you’ve accumulated a quarter for each state. While the latter route can take a very long time, this can serve to make the end result all the more exciting.

Clean Your State Quarters

In order to display your state quarters in an attractive manner, you should always clean them as soon as they’ve been acquired. Cleaning coins is very easy, and can be done with simple household materials. First, wash the quarters with hot water, drying them to remove any debris. Next, soak the coins in vinegar for at least one hour, which will help to get rid of anything that’s stuck on the coins. Once the quarters have soaked for a long enough period of time, you should rinse and dry them again, repeating the process until they are extremely shiny. Some coins can be excessively stubborn, in which case it can be helpful to enlist the help of a toothbrush during the rinsing process. With a little elbow grease, you should be able to get your quarters looking as if they just came off the mint.

Store Your State Quarters Correctly

There are a variety of different ways that one can go about storing their 50 state quarters. While some people enjoy the simplicity of keeping an unorganized stack of quarters in a box or plastic bag, others prefer to display their quarters in a more elegant manner. For these individuals, there’s no better way to store quarters than in a coin folder. Coin folders can be purchased online and at hobby shops, and allow you to display your quarters in an organized, attractive fashion. You may even be able to find a coin folder that is meant specifically to hold all 50 state quarters, which can bring your display to the next level. When purchasing a coin folder, ensure that the slots are meant to hold quarters, as those that are sized differently will be rendered useless.
