Tips for Decorating with a Hallway Bench

Sprucing up a hallway in your home can be a bit difficult, but using the right kind of bench can help you open up a number of decorating options. A hallway bench can enhance that function by transforming wasted space into a functional and even comfortable and inviting area of your home, providing both seating and storage.

Larger hallway spaces can accommodate a hall tree, a hybrid creation that combines a seating area that provides storage space under the seat for seasonal items such as beach towels for summer and winter gear for colder weather with a tall back and hanging hooks for coats and umbrellas over the seat. Rich wood can enhance the look of a tradition hall tree in a traditional home; white hall trees are compatible with a country theme.

For smaller spaces, conventional benches with or without backs are more practical. Place a cushion or pad over the bench for added comfort, and place baskets underneath to preserve space and reduce clutter in your hallway.

Another cozy idea for a hallway bench in a home with a rustic theme is to place a storage chest with a lift-up top by a window. Place cushions on top of the chest and along the wall underneath the window to create a snug window seat with generous storage space.

Whatever ideas you incorporate into decorating your hallway bench, the important factors are that the hallway bench should be in the same general style and scale as the rest of the house, or at least compatible with adjoining rooms. Measure any bench you are considering for your hallway carefully; it should also be narrow enough to allow unimpeded passage through the hallway.
