Tips for Decorating Your Lawn

Want to enhance the appearance of your lawn, but don’t have the money to hire a landscaper?  Fear no more.   Here are some inexpensive, do-it-yourself lawn decorating tips to transform any lawn into a showpiece.

The key to decorating a great space is to make sure the space allows for maximum enjoyment and relaxation.  When decorating a lawn, select one area to be the focal point.  Examples of a focal piece include a fountain, swing, arbor, bird bath or fire pit. For larger areas more than one focal piece can be used.   Once you decided your focal piece, start adding accessories and detail.  Treat your lawn as an extension of you.  Accessories vary by style and personality.

Create a pathway to your focal point using stepping stones.  Stepping stones provide, not only a visible path for guests, but also a way to dress-up garden areas.  A good path can enhance the appearance and design of a garden.  Material choices should be chosen carefully to fit the layout and traffic in the area.  For well-traveled areas such as a path from the home to a gate or front walk, it is best to use paving slabs, bricks, pebbles or rolls of wooden slats.

Brick laid in a basket weave pattern is attractive, as well as functional.  For paths less traveled, decorative stepping stones will add a nice touch to the yard.  Decorative stepping stones are available in all shapes, sizes and colors.  Fifteen-inch flower pedal stones add a cute whimsical touch, while antiqued stones add a little sophistication.  For those who are do-it-yourselfers, homemade stepping stone kits are available to personalize your garden and walkway areas.

Birdfeeders and birdbaths are nice additions to compliment focal areas and they attract a variety of birds and butterflies.  If you live along a migratory route, you’ll find the same birds will come back each year because of a known food source during their long journey.  Birdfeeders are available in the standard cylinder shape, but also in many decorative styles and shapes.  Some birdfeeders are even garden statues with a place for birdseed.  Birds do make a mess, so if you are not prepared for some additional cleaning and refilling of the containers, then maybe birdfeeders are not the right decorations.

Adding a water feature, such as a fountain, can turn any boring landscape into something spectacular.  Fountains provide a focal point and attract wildlife.  The soothing sound of flowing water is beneficial in reducing stress and providing a calm and relaxing environment.  Fountains do require some maintenance, such as refilling the water tank, treating water for algae growth and mosquitoes and regular cleanings.

Garden gazing balls or globes are nice accessories for lawns.  They reflect light and add color to the area.  Gazing balls are available in many colors, shapes and finishes.  They can be placed directly on the ground, in a stand or hung from a tree similar to Christmas ornaments.  Garden flags waving in the summer breeze add a touch of color and personality to lawns.  Select a flag to reflect your personal style or season.  Decorative flags can be mounted on the sides of homes, a small garden flag pole or wooden dowel rods.

What garden isn’t complete with some type of metal yard art?  Metal yard art is a favorite for many gardeners when decorating their yards.  You can find these little beauties in all shapes, designs, styles, heights and colors.  If you can’t find the perfect one for your lawn then someone can make one to suit your needs.  These can be placed in flower beds, out in the open, around mailboxes or patios or in flower pots.
