Tips for Feathered Hairstyles

By Marianne Dorado , last updated June 30, 2011

No matter what the season, feathers are always a great alternative to the predictable headband or rhinestone hair clip. Feathers are a fun way to give an everyday hairstyle an exotic edge. No matter what the length or color, there is a feathered hairstyle for everyone.

Soft Romantic Look
For a pretty romantic look, try accessorizing with longer softer plumes, like ostrich feathers, attached to a flower or ribbon bow. The drooping feathers, in either long or short hair, give an interesting alternative texture and lend dramatic flair to any look, especially when worn with hair down or in an up-do with loose curls. Dark jewel tones or light pastel colors are great.
Edgy Look
Stiff iridescent feathers in bright colors either on a clip or a headband can glam-up any outfit from a plain cocktail dress to t-shirt and jeans. Large fanned out pieces that curve to the shape of your head look especially good with short or long straight hair. Hair can be worn down or in a tight clean up-do. If the feathers are on a clip, try having them wrap around a bun or French twist as opposed to the side of your head for a different look.
Natural Look
Never underestimate the impact that a natural, un-dyed feather can have on an outfit. Great for casual everyday use, natural feathers go well with every hair color. Worn on clips of headbands, or even just loosely stuck into a bun or twist, natural feathers compliment skin tone and add a level of sophistication to casual daywear.
These are only a few ideas of how you can incorporate feathered accessories into your wardrobe. There is so much variety that the best way to come up with a good look is to experiment with everything until you find a style that is perfect for you!
