Tips for Finding Internships in Michigan

By Charles Dovbish , last updated December 25, 2011

An internship can get you hired at a great company after you have graduated college. Internships usually last during the fall and spring semesters of school, however, some internship programs allow students to work during the summer. Internships allow students to gain experience in their field while gaining class credit. If you live in the Michigan area and you are looking for an internship, there are a few ways that you can go about it. Finding an internship in your field of study is critical to gaining the experience that you need to make in the industry.

Before you ever start looking for an internship in Michigan you need to have your resume vetted. Michigan human resources departments like to see resumes that follow the Chicago Style. This is much different than APA or MLA format for resumes. If you don't know how to format your resume per Chicago style, you will need to have a resume professional look over it. You should be able to find resume writers at your local university. Your resume should be in chronological order instead of listing your education and previous experience from most relevant to least relevant like other states require.

Online Classifieds

Online classified ads are a great way to find internships in Michigan. There are a lot of online classified ads that will list spring, fall and summer internships in your area. Since you are looking for an internship in a specific area, look for online classified sites that are geared toward Michigan. Although Craigslist is the online giant of classifieds, there are several others will cater specifically to the Michigan area. USFreeAds, HotAds and MichiganFreeAds are a couple that you can start out with.

University Career Centers

Central Michigan University, Ferris State University, Eastern Michigan University and Lake Superior State University all have career centers to help you get an internship in your field of study. The career center is there to guide students on finding employment before and after they graduate college. These career professionals also know that you need experience before you can get hired on full time with a company. Companies will actually call the career center and tell them when they are looking for an intern so they will have up to date listings for the Michigan area.

Cold Calling

Cold calling is a very grassroots way of finding an internship, but it can be very effective. Companies love a “go-getter.” When you cold call they see that you’re hungry to learn about the industry. Simply ask them if they have any internships available and why you want to work for their company. If they don’t have any internships available, ask if they know of any other companies that are hiring within your field. More than likely they will have some suggestions if they aren’t hiring interns. There are a lot of companies based out of Michigan. No matter what your field of study is, you should be able to find an internship. Some companies include Abrams Air Cract, Ally Financial, General Motors, Family Christian Stores, and Little Caesars.
