Tips for Hanging a Pinata

When it comes to party favors, it’s difficult to beat the pinata. Pinatas are popular amongst children of all ages, and can be a great deal of fun in both small and large groups. One of the most common mistakes parents make when setting up a pinata is hanging it incorrectly, which can lead to the pinata falling before it breaks open, stifling the party in a heartbeat. Fortunately, there are plenty of ways to ensure that your pinata is hung correctly.

Use a Double Knot on the Pinata

Most pinatas are hung by inserting a rope through a loop that is normally situated at the top of the pinata. When pinatas fall prematurely, it is often a result of a weak knot tied at the loop. In order to ensure that the rope is capable of holding the pinata’s weight, you should always tie a double knot at the loop. Double knots are easy to learn, and provide a great deal of extra support when tied correctly in comparison to standard knots.

Choose the Right Spot

It is imperative to choose the right hanging spot for your pinata in order for it to be most effective. In general, the pinata should hang on a tree branch or other supportive structure that allows plenty of room on all sides for the children to hit it. Avoid hanging your pinata anywhere near windows or other fragile structures, as the results can be dangerous, and can even lead to injury.

Choose the Right Height

The height you hang your pinata is important in order for the children to be able to hit it correctly. While a pinata should be within the child’s reach, it should hang high enough so that it isn’t extremely easy to hit, as that would take all the fun out of the process. Strive to hang your pinata approximately 5 feet off the ground.
