Tips for Increasing Muscle Mass Healthily

By Erik Neilson , last updated January 4, 2012

For those who are interested in getting in shape, increasing muscle mass is typically the name of the game. Cutting down on body fat is one of the most difficult tasks that one can take on, although doing so and replacing it with muscle mass comes along with a great deal of health benefits, including more energy, a healthier heart and a more effective immune system. Bearing this in mind, it’s important to realize that many people take steps towards increasing their muscle mass that aren’t exactly healthy, some of which can actually have many negative consequences. The following are just a few tips for increasing one’s muscle mass in a healthy, sustainable manner.

Set a Calorie Goal

The first step towards increasing your muscle mass healthily is to determine just how many calories you need to take in on a daily basis. Calorie necessities can differ quite dramatically from one person to another, and are often dependent upon activity level, height, and various other factors. A typical individual needs approximately 2,000 calories per day in order to maintain a healthy weight, although those who are attempting to gain muscle mass will likely need more than this. While it can be tempting to bulk up with foods that are calorie-dense, this is usually not the healthiest method of going about upping your calories, as such foods are often rich in cholesterol and saturated fats. For best results, stick to a diet of lean proteins, vegetables, and complex carbohydrates.

Hire a Personal Trainer

Setting out to increase your muscle mass can be difficult, especially if you do not have a history of sticking to a productive fitness plan. In such a case, it’s almost always a good idea to hire a personal trainer. A personal trainer will not only help you to develop a plan that will assist in achieving your fitness goals, but will also be crucial in keeping you from overstepping your boundaries. Many people overshoot their abilities to lift weights in the beginning stages of training, for example, which often leads to injury. With a personal trainer on your side, however, you can leave the details of your fitness routine in the hands of a professional, dramatically decreasing the chances of getting injured during a workout.

Avoid Steroids

Steroids are quite popular amongst those in the fitness world, and are touted to increase muscle mass in extremely short periods of time. That said, these drugs can be exceedingly dangerous, and should be avoided at all costs. There is nothing that steroids will do for you that cannot be achieved through a combination of proper diet and a well-planned exercise regimen, no matter what the situation. While steroids may be a shortcut to increasing muscle mass, they can dramatically impact your health in negative ways. Strive to avoid any and all temptations to use steroids, even if you have been told that it is healthy or a good idea. After all, any physician with a good conscience is likely to steer you away from steroids, and for good reason.
