Here are tips for keeping track of what you have on your shelves. When you are in a hurry, it's easy to haphazardly place items on your closet shelves without thinking about their placement. This can make those same items difficult to find later.
Using storage bins will help you keep track of your items, because they allow you to group similar items together and minimize lose items sitting alone or even falling off the shelf. There are even clear bins to hold shoes available for purchase online. You can also print out labels to stick onto any solid colored bins that you might already have in your closet to identify the items inside the bin. It will be even easier to track your items if you group them into subcategories. Instead of just labeling a bin "shoes", perhaps label it "dress shoes" or "running shoes."
Keeping a step stool inside your closet can help you stay organized, because you'll be able to properly utilize even the shelving that may not be able to othwerwise reach. If you live in a warmer climate, you could store the sesonal items that you do not use as often, such as mittens or rain gear, on the top shelf. If you happen to need a rarely used item, you'll be able to reach it any time using the stool. You'll also be able to easily put away any item that may fall or become misplaced from the top shelf.
Whether you opt to put your clothing in bins or not, you'll have an easier time tracking your apparel if you keep similar clothing pieces together. Fold sweaters and keep them in their own pile. Do the same for T-shirts and jeans. If you take a clothing item off the self but then decide not to wear it, take the time to refold the piece instead of just throwing it back into the closet.
If you organize your closet and other storage units beforehand, it will become easy to track any items that you place on the shelves.
