Measuring a room seems like an easy task that anyone can do with a measuring tape, but often times the things that seem simple are the easiest to mess up. When you need proper measurements you don’t want to take any chances, especially when you are trying to fit a large piece of furniture or equipment into a small space. Some tips for accurately measuring a room are to use a good measuring tape, measure in the right place across the room, and keep an accurate record.
First you will need a measuring tape that is large enough for your room. Don’t get stuck in a fifteen-foot room with a ten-foot measuring tape. A twenty-five foot measuring tape is a standard size sold in hardware stores, and that size should accommodate most rooms.
Once you have a good measuring tape you need to know where in the room is the best place to take measurements. Most spaces have corners, doorways, hallways, closets, and other obstacles that can be a barrier to measuring accurately. Try to find the most direct line from wall to wall. If you can measure straight across the space you will get the most accurate measurement possible. It is also good to keep the measuring tape on the floor so that it does not loosen or bow in the middle, which would lead to an inaccurate measurement. If you have to measure an odd shaped room, take separate measurements for these areas. For instance, if you have an L shaped room measure one section of the room first, and then the other section of the room. Calculate square footage from each section and add them together for a total room size.
To keep an accurate record of the measurement, make sure to write everything down. If the room measures twelve feet by twelve feet then write down this measurement and multiply these two figures together to get your total square footage of the room. In this example, a twelve by twelve room is 144 square feet. Following these tips will give you the most accurate measurement of a room.
