Tips for Men Buying Sweat Suits

By Kenneth Ho , last updated June 23, 2011

Men love sweat suits because they are comfortable.  They're easy to wear and can be worn with any body type.  Traditionally, sweat suits are considered to be athletic apparel, hence the "sweat" in its name.  Warm-ups or tracksuits are other common, fairly interchangeable names.  The sweat suit is comprised of a jacket and pants, both of which are made of soft material that's conducive to physical exercise.  Guys who love to play sports will want one.

Unless you have a lot of money, it would be smart to shop around.  Sporting goods stores are your best bets.  Anyone of them should have racks full of warm-ups.  One of the positives is that the majority of sweat suits are affordable.  While their prices won't be under twenty dollars, you won't find them exorbitant either.  Some might retail above a hundred, but that's generally about as high as they'll go.  The nice thing is that affordable suits can be just as functional and comfortable as the expensive ones.

Sweat suits are made for physical activity.  Men should buy the suit that maximizes their ability to exercise.  Of course, warm-ups, as their name suggests, are meant to be worn as outerwear under cool conditions.  At the very least, sweat suits should be worn while you stretch out and warm up your muscles.  Suits that are too restrictive and don't allow you to move freely should be avoided.  Suits that are too baggy can be just as bothersome.  The best idea would be to find a sweat suit that is your size.  The sleeves and pants should match the lengths of your limbs.  A good tip would be to run in place as you're trying the outfit on in the store.

Make sure the suit can be taken off easily.  The sweat suit can be worn over other clothes.  You will often see athletes wear warm-ups over their game jerseys.  Sporty guys will want to buy suits that are easy to take off.  Breakaway pants, as an example, are basketball pants that have buttons down the sides that allow you to rip them off in an instant.  Buy a sweat suit that is loose enough to wear clothes underneath.  For a guy, it's always nice to have the option.  Then, if it gets really cold, you can always layer up.  Keep in mind, though, this is not advice to buy sweat suits that are baggy.

Always consider the material of the suit.  Sweat suits are typically made of light weight materials like nylon and cotton, as well as synthetic fibers.  Ask what you want out of a suit?  Some guys prefer a really light-weight suit that they can wear while exercising.  Others just want to stay warm.  If it's the former, finding a suit that breathes is key.  If it's the later, buy a thicker one.  The lining is one component that often gets overlooked.  Sweat suits are like a tight pair of jeans that you tolerate because of how great it looks.  You buy warm-ups because they're soft.  Since the lining is what your skin feels, that's the part that you should pay a lot of attention to.  Some warm-ups are cheap due to the lower-quality, less expensive materials they are made with.  Don't buy a sweat suit that irritates your skin.

Sweat suits are becoming more fashionable.  In the days of yore, sweat suits were very colorful, gaudy even.  Not so any more.  The sports apparel world is taking after the fashion world.  Suits are becoming more fashion-friendly.  They are sleek and more form-fitting.  Their designs are simple.  Guys should embrace this.  Don't expect to find too many warm-ups that have a lot of crazy colors or patterns.  These days most sweat suits are going to feature neutral colors.  Being a fan of a sports team is a different story.  If you're a fan of the Dutch soccer team, by all means feel free to wear orange.  You may however, get sick of a loud color if you sport it too often.  That is why a neutral color is always suggested, especially if you're hitting the gym five days a week.

Last but not least, buy the sweat suit that you plan on wearing the most.  Don't buy the fancy one that is scientifically engineered if you don't think you will wear it.  That's basically money down the drain.   The perfect sweat suit is like that t-shirt we sleep in every night.  We wear it because we love it.  The same thinking should be behind any decision to buy a sweat suit.
