Tips for Throwing a My Little Pony Birthday

As your little one's birthday approaches, you may hear her clamoring for you to throw her a My Little Pony-themed birthday party. The characters of My Little Pony, with their brightly colored bodies and hair, are popular on TV and in toy stores across America. Using the tips below, you'll be able to plan ahead of time so that your child will be able to have a memorable celebration featuring these loveable figures.

Commercial vs. DIY

The Hasbro Company—which creates the My Little Pony line—makes it easy for you to throw a My Little Pony party for your little girl. The company licenses its characters for print on many products. This means that you're probably able to go to a local discount store and purchase invitations, tablecloths, plates, cups, napkins, goody bags and party favors—everything you'd need for a party—with the My Little Pony characters printed on them. If the stores in your area don't carry these products, you can order online.

You don't have to purchase these products, however. If you're artistic, you can draw your own versions of the characters to use as decorations. Even if you're not artistically inclined, it's relatively easy to print out pictures of the characters from the Internet and use them to create the theme.

Invitations

Your invitations will set the tone for the party and inform all of the guests about the My Little Pony theme. Purchasing pre-made invitations that feature the characters is a cheap and easy solution, but you can also make your own by cutting the pony shape out of cardstock or drawing a horseshoe on the card. Make sure that you include all the relative details for the party, including your address, the time of the party, and a number or email for other parents to RSVP.

Cake

The cake is undoubtedly the centerpiece of your My Little Pony party. The easiest way to get a My Little Pony cake is to order it through a bakery. Most supermarket bakeries offer sheet cakes with the characters. You'll be able to print your child's name on the cake and allow her to choose the colors of the pony.

You also have options if you want to make the cake at home, which can be considerably less expensive. One way to do this is to make a sheet cake and decorate it with icing to look like a landscape (with grass and maybe a river), then place small My Little Pony toys on top of the cake. You can also purchase a cake pan that's in the shape of a pony--they aren't technically My Little Pony pans, but when you use bright colored icing, the guests will think that it's one of the Ponies.

Games and Activities

You'll also want to play games that relate to the My Little Pony theme. "Pin the Tail on the Donkey" is a classic party game. To incorporate the theme, you simply use one of the Ponies instead of a donkey. Blindfold each guest and have her try to place the tail in the correct position.

Another fun game is to create glitter play dough. Start with a homemade play dough recipe and give each guest her own small ball. Have her create a well in the dough and fill it with fine craft glitter, then let her work the glitter into the dough. This also makes a good party favor.

If your child and her friends are crafty, you can give them printed-out pictures of the My Little Ponies to color. Set up a separate art table for this activity.
