Tips for Trimming Nose Hair

Excessive nose hair can be embarrassing and cause self-consciousness, making for awkward social situations, so it's important to know how to properly trim it. Many people believe completely removing all nose hair is the way to go, but this is a poor idea.  Nose hair is essential to filter out dust and dirt from entering your body.  Without nose hair, environmental toxins can irritate your nasal cavity or even enter your lungs and lead to more significant issues with your health.  Plus, removing all nose hair can be dangerous if you do so by placing sharp objects deep inside your nasal cavity.  Thus, it is important that you trim, but not entirely remove, your nose hair.  Read below for some tips on how to trim your nose hair in a safe, effective manner.

The best way to trim nose hair is to remove only the parts of the hair that are visible when your head is tilted back.  This will make it so people cannot view your nose hair, yet still leave enough nose hair for you to remain healthy.  Avoid plucking your nose hair, as this will lead to irritation.  In addition to the aforementioned problems that complete nose hair removal can cause, trimming the hair too far can also lead to issues.  Trim too deep and you could wind up with damaged nasal tissue, which eventually transitions into sores or pimples.  The damaged tissue could even become infected with bacteria.

Before actually trimming your nose hair, make sure you are completely awake.  Do not perform the task just after waking up or right before bed, as a lack of full concentration can lead to injury.  Trimming your nose hair following a shower is perfect because not only will you be alert, but this is the time when your nose hair will be at its cleanest and softest.  If you do not take a shower before trimming, gently wash the inside of your nose with a moist cotton swab.  Make sure your nose is completely dry before trimming.

Find a location with a mirror and plenty of light, such as in a bathroom or by using a makeup mirror with a light.  It is important to be able to see what you are doing so as to not risk injury.  Also make sure your trimming product, whether scissors or an electric nose hair trimmer, is completely clean.  If it is not a new product, sanitize it before use.  Running it under hot water should do the trick, but check the packaging on your particular product for specific cleaning details.

Insert the scissors or electric nose hair trimmer into your nasal cavity just slightly and begin trimming.  Whether using scissors or an electric nose hair trimmer, make sure the product is neither too close to your nostril nor too deep inside your nasal cavity.  If you are using an electric trimmer, make sure it has a built-in nick guard to assist you in this process.  Also be certain it has fully functioning batteries.  Again, do not remove too much nose hair.  When finished, remove the scissors or electric trimmer and clean your trimming device by sterilizing with alcohol and washing with soap.
