By Heidi Green , last updated April 12, 2011

One of the most interesting and aesthetically pleasing ways to use colored lights in your outdoor lighting scheme. Typically as simple as placing a colored insert of film or glass over your lighting fixture, you can create an array of interesting moods and effects with a colored outdoor lighting. If you are interested in adding a bit of flair to your outdoor lighting situation, read on for some tips that may be of some use to you.

Colorful Stringed Lights

For a bit of quirky flair, consider incorporating multicolored string lights into your outdoor areas. Commonly seen wrapped around Christmas trees or strung up around windows during the holidays, these fun lights have year-round appeal if done right. String some along a fence or around a patio overhang to create an instantly festive environment.

Garden Glow Orbs

For an interesting garden enhancement, place a glow orb among the various flowers and vegetables you are cultivating in your garden. These spherical glass or plastic encased lights emit a mysterious and ambience enhancing glow that lights up the surrounding vegetation with a soft halo of milky incandescence. They are fairly easy to make on your own, as well; simply take a round light fixture covering and bundle up a string of lights inside of it, using whatever color you wish.

If you have a yard or patio that you use often, why not double the functional using time of the area and install some sort of outdoor lighting solution? You have plenty of options available to you, as any walk through a home improvement center or gardening store will show you, but for a unique twist, consider incorporating colored lights into your backyard or patio.
