Boarding school is a great place to send students to learn independence and responsibility while preparing themselves for the college experience. There are some solid diverse boarding school choices in Alabama for parents with high school aged children.

Alabama School of Math and Science

Located in the Gulf Coast city of Mobile, the Alabama School of Math and Science is considered one of the state’s top magnet schools. Offering specialized classes in the sciences, students have traditionally raised their ACT scores by five points after attending this school. The faculty is top notch, all having at least a Master’s degree and most having a PhD. Admission is open to all Alabama students, but they must be accepted from a competitive field. There is no tuition or boarding fees. The only fees that have to be paid are annual activity fees that cover things like school trips.

Alabama School of Fine Arts

Like the Alabama School of Mathematics and Science, the School of Fine Arts attracts students from all over the state for specialized, tuition-free education. Located in the city of Birmingham, the school is mixed day school and residential, giving students in the Birmingham area access to a specialized arts education as early as seventh grade. In addition to the classes necessary for a regular high school diploma, the school offers courses in creative writing, dance, mathematics and science, music, theatre arts and visual arts.

Indian Springs School

This private school situated outside of Birmingham was founded in 1952 on the principles of tolerance and diversity. The school continues that tradition and emphasizes strong, individualized education. Classes are small with a student body of only 300 students. The faculty is well qualified, many boasting PhDs. Tuition is expensive, but there are financial aid opportunities for needy students.
