By Jonathan Bales , last updated December 22, 2011

Understanding basic survival skills is important for everyone, but it is particularly true for outdoorsmen. Those who spend a lot of time outdoors are more susceptible to facing danger, whether it is in the form of getting lost, confronting a wild, or something else. The key to surviving when in a sticky situation is keeping calm, as you need a clear head to make proper survival decisions. Shelter, food, and potable drinking water are the primary things one needs to survive, with things like fire being a means by which you can obtain the most basic human resources. Thus, is very important for an outdoorsman to understand the proper way to obtain the items which can help him or her survive. Read on to learn more about a few of the top survival skills for outdoorsmen.

Building a Fire

Building a fire is crucial for an outdoorsman, as it provides heat, a means to cook food, and a way to make dirty drinking water clean. Plus, fire keeps away creatures to protect you at night, and it can also help you quickly dry your clothing. On top of all that, fire is a means to signal for help if you are lost. Fire is thus the most important "non-vital" survival item.

There are a variety of ways to make a fire, with the easiest being a fire starter kit or butane lighter. Thus, before heading outdoors, always make sure you have one of these items on hand. Of course, the more options the better, so take two or even three ways to start a fire with you when you head out to hike, hunt, or do some other outdoors activity. Waterproof matches, for example, are a great alternative to the other options. You can find all of these items at any outdoors store or survival website. Being able to build a fire is all about proper preparation.

Making Shelter

Shelter is usually last on the list of priorities for someone in a survival situation, with food and water coming first. Without proper shelter, though, there is no way you can survive an extended period of time in the wilderness. Shelter is not just an area where you sleep, but any means through which you protect your body. Thus, clothing is a form of shelter. Without clothing for warmth and protection, you will be in big trouble in the wild. Make sure you choose a few different layers of clothing before heading outdoors, including something warm. Use fire to keep your clothing dry at all times.

To build a proper shelter, you need to think about predators and warmth. If you are in an area that is cold or will receive precipitation, you need proper insulation on your shelter. A space blanket is a great option, but you can be creative here. Either way, taking the time to make a quality shelter is vital for a surviving outdoorsman.

Food and Water

The bulk of your food and water should come from your initial supply. Never head on an extended outdoor trip without plenty of drinking water and food. Make sure you ration your water properly. You do not need a ton of water each day to survive, but you do need a moderate amount in a consistent manner. Take in as little water as is necessary to survive each day in case you are forced to stay outdoors longer than you anticipated.
