Type of Cheap Plastic Planters

By Heidi Green , last updated March 9, 2011

Plastic planters aren't just cheaper than other types of planters, they're also easier to clean and less prone to mold and rot. If you're searching for a more affordable alternative to wood, terra cotta, ceramic or glass planters, plastic planters are definitely the best option. No matter which style you choose, always make sure the container has drainage holes. Most plants need well-drained soil in order to keep them from developing root rot and disease. To decide which type of plastic planter is best for you, consider the following options.

Plastic Hanging Basket

Plastic hanging baskets are great accessories for decks and patios. They're not as messy as wire baskets with liners, and since they're so affordable, you can buy several. Many plastic hanging baskets come with attached reservoirs to catch excess water that drains from the planter, so you won't have to worry about them leaking as you walk underneath them.

Plastic Window Box

Plastic window boxes are great for planting miniature herb gardens or flowers. Because they're long and rectangular in shape, they provide enough space to plant a variety of flowers or herbs. Consider basil, rosemary, cilantro or thyme for your herb garden, or plant a mix of sweet potato vines, geraniums and ornamental grass sprigs for a beautiful flower box. Plastic window boxes are also less permanent than ones that affix to your window, allowing you to change you mind as much as you want.

Round Plastic Planter

Sometimes, all you need is a cute little flowerpot. If you're looking for a simple way to plant flowers to decorate your porch or patio, choose a round planter. These are available in a wide variety of shapes and sizes to suit your needs. Many come with drip trays to catch excess water. You can even plant tomatoes and vegetables in larger round planters.
