Types of Facial Treatments to Brighten Up Wintery Skin

By Jill Gardiner , last updated December 23, 2011

While the icy winter landscapes may be bright and glistening outside, the combination of cold temperatures, harsh winds, and drying indoor heat can quickly turn the skin on your face into a dull, flaking, and splotchy mess. You don’t have to let winter’s triple whammy of skin stressors take the glow out of your complexion, though; you can brighten up wintry skin by using facial treatments that even out redness, banish dull complexions, moisturize dry patches, or soothe flaky, itchy skin. Don’t let the gray days of winter be reflected in your face! Add one of these facial treatments to your winter skincare routine.

For Redness

If you have sensitive skin that shows its distaste for wintry conditions in irritated patches of redness, check out Clinique’s Redness Solutions Urgent Relief Cream. This cream soothes irritation and reduces redness on call while also strengthening skin to prevent additional damage, and does it all with an oil-free, extra gentle formula that’s allergy tested and devoid of potentially irritating fragrances. Try the Urgent Relief Cream in conjunction with other products from Clinique’s Redness Solutions line, such as the Daily Relief Cream and the Soothing Cleanser.

For Moisture

It’s not the cold air outside that’s the most serious offender when it comes to robbing skin of necessary moisture, it’s actually the dry heat indoors that does the real damage. Investing in a humidifier for your home and office can help to offset the drying effects, but moisturizing facial treatments will give your skin an extra hydrating boost. Check out Olay’s Definity Night Restorative Cream for a winter-worthy layer of protection. If acne presents an additional challenge, try Philosophy’s oil-free When Hope Is Not Enough capsules with hyaluronic acid-peptide capsules to help skin hold onto water.

Harsh winds and freezing temperatures aren’t guiltless in the robbing of moisture from your skin. For extra protection when you’re venturing out into the great white world, add a layer of moisture barrier, such as Aquaphor or Gloves in a Bottle shielding lotion. Get a weekly moisture boost from Ling Skincare’s Ginseng Therapy Moisture Mask, which you can leave on for up to 30 minutes for a super-hydration treatment.

For Exfoliation

A dull complexion is the result of dead skin cells forming a layer on top of luminescent, healthy skin, and there’s only one way to remedy this: exfoliate! An at home skin-polishing kit, such as DDF’s Revolve 400x Micro-Polishing System, can help to slough away those glow-stealing cells in no time flat. For sensitive skin that may be irritated by aggressive scrubbing, try an exfoliating treatment that is enzyme-based for a gentler way to banish dead skin cells, such as the Bio-Enzyme Refining Complex from Amorepacific.

For Tough Flakiness

Some skin on your face is more susceptible to dryness than other parts, and this can leady to areas of visible roughness or flakiness that need specialized, targeted treatment. Soften up areas with steam, then try a serious moisturizer like Clinique’s Moisture Surge Extra. Cane + Austin’s Retexturizing Treatment Pads contain glycolic acid that can help to break up tough patches of dry skin. Or, you can try applying 1% hydrocortisone cream, followed by Healthy Skin Face Lotion from Neutrogena, which also contains glycolic acid.
