Types of Hammers and Mallets
Hammers and mallets are some of the most useful tools available to the home craftsman. While most people own at least one basic hammer, many are unaware that there are actually a variety of different types of hammers and mallets, each with its own specific use. A professional craftsman will often employ many different hammers depending upon what the job calls for, and learning their different uses can be beneficial even for those who do not find themselves using hammers regularly.
Claw Hammer
The claw hammer is what most people think of when they hear the word “hammer.” This is a great all-around tool that is used in most general carpentry jobs. The claw aspect of this hammer is used to pull nails from the wall, making the claw hammer an effective multitasking tool. Claw hammers can come in a variety of shapes and sizes, and can be made with both wooden and metal shafts, with wood being the most common material used. Every homeowner should have a claw hammer in their toolkit.
Ball-Pein Hammer
Ball-pein hammers are used quite frequently by engineers. The pein, or round ball on the backside of the hammer, can be used to shape metals, as well as for riveting. Like the claw hammer, ball-pein hammers are suitable general carpentry jobs, especially for those that involve the need to bend metals.
Carpenter’s Mallet
Also known as a club hammer, the carpenter’s mallet is used in jobs that require a little extra power. Furniture assembly and shaping metals often involve the use of a carpenter’s mallet, as do any other jobs that require force without blows that cause marring. While most home craftsmen will not find themselves using a carpenter’s mallet on a daily basis, it is a good idea to have one around, as they can come in handy during special projects.
