Jeans are a timeless article of clothing that are likely a staple in your wardrobe, what follows is the ultimate guide for men's jean shopping.  Jeans represent the foundation on which the rest of a man's wardrobe is built.  There are a variety of types of denim that can be mixed and matched to create an abundance of different styles.  This versatility is probably the most important trait of jeans and the reason they have withstood the test of time.  You can dress them up or dress them down, wear them to work or on a date, or adorn them around the house.  With the variety of jeans types and styles comes a sometimes tricky buying process.  Picking the perfect pair of jeans can be difficult, but there are a few things for which to look.  Below is the ultimate men's jeans guide.

First, consider where and when you plan to wear a pair of jeans.  Do you want to wear them to work?  If so, you should probably forgo a little bit of comfort for a more professional look.  That means no holes or fading.  In general, darker jeans are better for the workplace.  Look for a pair of dark, non-faded, classic jeans that go well with dress shoes.  Do you prefer to wear your jeans at home or to casual events?  If so, your options are a bit more flexible.  If you prefer jeans with holes, fading and so on, go for it.  Your casual jeans should fit with the rest of your clothing.  In all likelihood, you will be wearing these jeans with sneakers or casual shoes, so make sure they match with these as well.

In terms of timelessness, classic blue jeans or dark denim are the way to go.  The former are tremendous for a casual look and are truly one of the most timeless articles of clothing available.  Similarly, dark denim's versatility is astounding.  Dark jeans can be dressed up or down, going with a work-ready blazer or a casual t-shirt.  Jeans with excessive fading, holes and so on may all look great, but keep in mind that they are simply a product of the times.  These styles will eventually fade, so you should look for a different style of jeans if you want a pair you can wear for years to come.

Next, consider the fit of the jeans.  You can buy slim, straight, relaxed, classic and so on.  In general, straight leg and boot cut jeans are the most classic.  They are extremely versatile, capable of being worn with just about any outfit.  Slim or straight fits are probably best for work or dressier occasions, while a relaxed fit is perfect to be worn around the house.  If you are looking for an all-around pair of jeans, shy away from bell-bottom jeans, which are more of a fad than a classic style.  When trying the jeans on, make sure you have plenty of room to maneuver.  If you plan to wear your jeans during physical activity, you will need a bit more room than usual.  If the jeans are for work, a tighter fit is acceptable.
