Using Fertilizer Stakes

By Joseph King , last updated March 19, 2011

Fertilizer stakes are a simple, low-maintenance way to fertilize shrubs or trees. The stakes contain nutrients and fertilizer that is slowly released into the soil, to provide your plants with proper care all season long. Working with fertilizer stakes is easy and it will only take a few minutes to get on the road to green plants and healthy trees.

Fertilizer stakes are a more efficient and less messy way to ensure the proper growth of your trees or shrubs. There is no need to worry about measuring out and spreading fertilizer, and rain or wind will not wash away or displace the stake, as may happen with conventional fertilizer. Stakes are often cheaper than traditional options and last up to six months. This slow release of nutrients prevents and too much fertilizer from burning the plant and causing damage rather than helping the plant.

Because tree roots are buried deep in the ground, traditional fertilizer has difficulty reaching them. Fertilizer stakes reach deep into the ground to deliver nutrients directly to the roots. To maximize their benefit place the stakes around the dripline of the tree. Spikes should always be placed at least two feet from the trunk, even if the dripline is less than two feet. The packaging for the stakes will tell you how many total spikes to place based on your trees dripline. Make sure to follow these directions.

Fertilizer stakes come in a variety of different brands and types. Make sure to read the label carefully to make sure you are getting what you need for your plants. Take note of any special directions that are unique to the product.

After you have hammered the spikes in, all your work is done. Simply sit back and enjoy the way your plants grow greener and brighter than the ever have before.
