The process of applying to and eventually being accepted into medical school is a daunting one. Once an applicant has been accepted into a medical school the issue of money becomes a very real issue. The price of a world class medical education does not come with a cheap price tag. One viable option to lessen the financial burden is to apply for medical school scholarships. There are numerous organizations out there that offer scholarships to potential students so that they may get their requisite education. Often times these grants and scholarships are the only way otherwise qualified individuals will be able to afford medical school.
If you are hoping to acquire a scholarship, you must realistically stand out from your peers. This may be accomplished in several ways, but primarily through a strong GPA. The greater aptitude one displays through their studies the more likely a scholarship committee will choose you as their scholar. It is not in a scholarship’s best interest to invest their precious dollars in an applicant that does not have the mental fortitude to finish a grueling MD program.
There are an abundance of sources for medical school scholarships. A few are issued by private companies that are interested in cultivating new talent in the medical field. Other medical school scholarships are awarded on a conditional basis. For example, one condition may require the recipient to practice medicine in a disadvantaged area after graduation for a certain amount of time. This is a fine way to contribute to an economically troubled area after graduation; in essence, the young doctor would be paying the gratitude bestowed upon them back to the community.
The competition for medical school scholarships is as competitive and grueling as medical school itself. How might someone distinguish themselves from the pack to prove their worthiness of such an endowment? It is important to demonstrate that you are up to the task of completing the required coursework and that medicine is truly your life’s work.
Some organizations to consider when searching for medical school scholarships include the Bristol-Myers Squibb Foundation and the Myrtle Siegfried M.D. and Michael Vigilante M.D. Scholarship fund. The latter of these two organizations requires that you live in a specific area geographically to qualify for the scholarship. The area in which you live in may be of a great advantage in qualifying for scholarships, as there are many scholarships with geographic restrictions. Check for scholarships offered in your area to give yourself a greater chance of being awarded scholarships.
Bear in mind that organizations exist that cater to specifics tracks of medicine. If you are planning to specialize in podiatry there is a good chance that a scholarship exists for it. Be vigilant in your search for scholarships that are limited in scope, for if you fit their specifications then you are more likely to be awarded the scholarship than if you apply for broad, general scholarships. If your intent is to get into research make sure that the medical school scholarship is designed for students who are getting into that field.
