What to Wear to a College Graduation Party

By Erik Neilson , last updated May 24, 2011

Graduating college is one of the most exciting experiences one can enjoy throughout their life, and the party that follows is often just as fun. When it comes to dressing correctly, a lot of people don’t know where to start. Dressing for a graduation party usually isn’t much different than dressing for graduation itself, and it's simple to be comfortable and look great at the same time.

Men typically don’t put a great deal of worry into what they wear to a graduation party, but since photos are often taken and moments are immortalized at these parties, it's advisable to look your best. Try wearing a polo shirt, khakis and a nice pair of shoes. Alternatively, a well-pressed button-up shirt with a nice pair of denim jeans and dark sneakers can make for a great evening outfit. The bottom line is to be clean and presentable, no matter what it is you decide to wear.

For women, wearing the right ensemble to a graduation party is often quite important. Since graduation typically happens as summer begins to move in, a bright, attractive summer dress can serve as a great option. Floral-printed skirts are also options, or simply a nice top with your favorite pair of jeans. Avoid wearing heels if possible; your feet may become uncomfortable if you’ll be standing for a long period of time.

General Guidelines

Whether male or female, the most important thing is to show up to the party looking as presentable as possible. Clean shoes, well-ironed clothes and a fresh shower are all essential elements of dressing well for a party. If you take the above steps in preparation for the party, you can better enjoy the time with your friends and family without worrying about not being dressed for the occasion.
