Every May and June, legions of students around the United States celebrate some of life's greatest milestones at graduation parties. Whether you have a preschool, high school, college or even post grad graduation to celebrate, you are going to need something nice to wear. When you are in your 40s, you could be celebrating your child's graduation or even your own if you took a nontraditional route to your degree or pursued a post grad degree. Since this is bound to be one of the most important moments in the graduate's or even your life, you are going to want to wear something memorable.

Attending a Child's Graduation

If you have a preschool, middle school or high school graduation party to attend, you should dress as you would for a nice brunch. Choose a sundress or some dressy slacks with a colorful blouse if you are a woman. You can pair your outfit with some strappy sandals. These events are usually held during the daytime and are often outdoors. If you are a man, dress in business casual attire. Chinos and a collared shirt are appropriate.

Attending a College or Post Grad Graduation

On the one hand, college and post grad graduations tend to be a bit more formal. On the other, if you attend the actual graduation, you could be sitting in a tent in ninety degree weather for six hours. You need to choose an outfit that is both elegant and comfortable. Try to dress as you would for a daytime wedding. You might wear a special occasion suit in a pastel or gold color or a conservative cocktail dress, if you are attending a nighttime party. Men should wear suits. If the graduation party is being held in your honor and you expect to see the faculty of the department you graduated from, remember that the party is also a professional event. Skip the sexy dresses or platform heels.
