When denim moves from bottom to top, it seems many people have difficulty figuring out what to wear with their fabulous denim shirt. The perennial neutral, the pair of jean pants, just doesn’t seem to fit the bill (though, depending on the pair, the ensemble could actually be traffic-stopping). Much depends on the style of your denim shirt, the occasion for which your wearing it, and whether you’re of the opinion that leggings can pass for pants. Don’t forget to takes these suggestions as guidelines and allow your personal style final say.

A Fancy Skirt

Throw the fabric police for a loop and combine your casual denim shirt with a flouncy, silk, chiffon or sequin skirt. Your friends won’t know what hit them when they see you bouncing down the street, seamlessly melding two totally different sorts of fabric. The best part is that this sort of ensemble transitions from day to night with ease; perfect if you have a date after a day at the office.

Leggings

If your denim shirt is more of a tunic, consider throwing it over a pair of black or patterned leggings. The stiffer denim fabric will pair nicely with the softness of your tights, and your denim will stand out. Wear a couple of bangles and a pair of shiny sandals, and you’ll be unstoppable whether walking, running or dancing the night away.

White or Black

Out-neutral your neutral with a pair of black or white pants. You’ll look casual, put-together and ready for a weekend day out in the sun. The denim top and black or white bottom is a classic approach to jean shirts. Throw on a brown belt and suddenly, you’ll be rocking the neutral trifecta. Wear gold or silver jewelry and make-up and there’s no way you won’t blend flawlessly with the room you’re in and the person you’re with.

Denim

Once upon a time, wearing denim with denim was one of the worst fashion faux pas one could commit. But times have changed, and now denim and denim have become a fashion statement worn by some of the most trendy dressers in the world of style. Try not to match your denim washes too closely; instead wear dark wash jeans with a lighter denim top. If you want to push this trend to the limit, try leaning toward a denim warrior approach with as many different shades of denim as you can fit on your body.

So throw on that denim shirt and wear it proud with any of these pairing options. When it comes to accessories, don’t hold back on shine and sparkle, and feel free to belt according to your whim. And don’t forget: fashion should be enjoyable, and your jean shirt should bring you joy above all else
