When your child, or the child of a friend, has their first communion, you want to be sure to dress fashionably, but also appropriately. You need to know what to wear to a first communion to make sure you don’t have a fashion faux pas and embarrass yourself in the church. Some simple things to know to do are: to be modest, dress for church, and don’t be flashy.
Depending on how you are related to the person who is taking their first communion, your outfit can be very important. If it is your child, then you will be on showcase with many eyes upon you, so make sure you look appropriate. During first communion the only people wearing white should be the children participating in the ceremony. Don’t wear white, but don’t wear flashy colors either. You want the attention to be on the person taking first communion, not on your outfit.
To be safe, dress modestly in neutral colors. A conservative suit or dress is appropriate if you are female, and a nice suit with a tie and jacket if you are male. Stick to colors like grays, tans, browns, light or navy blues, pale yellows, or anything neutral that won’t jump out at people. Women should never wear a dress or skirt that has a hem line above the knees, or show any cleavage. Stay away from sleeveless items unless you have a jacket or cover-up of some sort, and wear modest heels or flats with tan hosiery. For men, do not wear shorts, boots or tennis shoes. A suit with full length pants and dress shoes fits the occasion.
Children who are participating in the ceremony should wear white for their first communion. If children are attending that are not in the ceremony they should follow their parents example of appropriate attire. Following all of these suggestions will guarantee that you are dressed appropriately and know what to wear to a first communion.
