What to Wear with a Long White Dress

When it comes to wearing a long white dress, it's all about how you style it. A long white dress is basically a blank canvas, so with the right accessories you can have an endless variety of looks. It's a great versatile option. There are a few tips you should keep in mind when wearing a long white dress: make sure the dress isn't see-through (if it is wear a slip or flesh-colored underwear), decide on a look, introduce a pop of color, and keep the overall look simple.

Necklaces and Pendants

Wearing necklaces and pendants is a great way to accessorize a long white dress. When necklaces are the main accessory, it draws the eye upwards and keeps the focus on your face. Because a white maxi dress is very basic, it is generally better to go with a big statement piece rather than a simple pendant. If you've been looking for the right opportunity to wear that big multi string beaded necklace, now's your chance. Having said that, a simple pearl necklace would also work well if you're going for chic and elegant. If you're going for summertime casual, choose something big, chunky and wooden. Add a wooden bracelet or bangle to complete the look. Metallic pieces are also a great option, especially for nighttime. A big gold or silver necklace is an easy way to polish up your look. Just remember to always keep an editing eye, and don't over-accessorize. If the necklace is the showpiece, then keep the bracelets to a minimum and wear simple earrings, if any at all.

Cropped on Top

When Autumn rolls around, you can still wear your long white summer dress by pairing it with a cropped sweater or jacket. The length of the jacket should be at, or above the natural waistline.

Not only does the extra layer keep you warm, it creates a flattering silhouette. The juxtaposition of opposites is usually always intriguing. By wearing something short over a long dress, you can look longer and leaner. If you're wearing a loose-fitted, flowing dress then you should probably go with a short tailored jacket that fits closely to the waist, rather than something that just hangs away from the body. A cute bolero works great for a classy evening, as does a shawl. Just keep in mind the fit of both the dress and the top, and make sure that they go well together and work for your body; again, it's all about keeping an editing eye.

Belts

Since you're wearing a solid block of color, wearing a belt is a great way to break up the white and add visual interest. However, if the dress happens to have an empire waist (meaning it has a particularly high waist and sits right below the bust), then a belt is not a good option. A wide belt that cinches at the natural waist is a great way to show off curves and emphasizes an hourglass figure. This is an especially good option for those with a tiny waist.
