Where to Buy Men's Tank Tops

By Anne Counter , last updated November 18, 2011

Men's tank tops might not be quite as common as women's, but if you look in the right places, then they aren't that hard to find. The trick to finding good tank tops, though, is to decide on what type of tank top you need before you begin your search. For example, if you are looking for something to work out in, you probably won't be looking in the same places as someone who is looking for something to match skinny jeans. Once you narrow down a few possible places to shop for your tank top, you really should consider visiting stores in person to try stuff on. Tank tops are a little harder to wear than regular tees, so you are going to want to make sure that you get one that fits you properly.

Tank Tops for Working Out

Most guys who are in the market for a new tank top need the shirt because they plan to work out in it. Tank tops are way more comfortable to wear when you are hot and sweaty than shirts with sleeves are. Tanks keep you much cooler and you can avoid embarrassing pit stains in them. If you are just looking for a regular, cotton tank top to lift weights or do cardio in, check out the selection at your local Champs Sporting Goods store. Champs has men's tanks for under ten bucks.

If you need some kind of special sporting tank, like a tank top made of high tech synthetic fibers that will wick your sweat away while not rubbing your skin, check out a Nike store. Nike has a huge selection of men's tanks made especially for running, cycling, or playing basketball. They even carry compression tanks, which are supposed to help increase your endurance while preventing injury. The Nike tanks aren't cheap, though. Most run between $25 and $50, and one is even priced over $70.

Old Fashioned White Tanks

Also known as undershirts, good, old fashioned tank tops are a staple of most men's wardrobes. You might wear these underneath of your button up work shirt everyday. Fitted white tanks can also look very cool on their own. Match them with a pair of jeans and some well worn engineer's boots. You can pick up six packs of white tanks from Target for under $20, or you can buy a single Calvin Klein white tank from Nordstrom for just over $50.

Tank Tops for Surfer Dudes

Surfing is a sport and guys who surf often wear tanks for the same reasons as guys who jog or lift weights, but they often wear them as a fashion statement. For this reason, stores that carry athletic wear usually don't stock things for surfers. If you need a tank top to wear to the beach, visit a PacSun store in your local mall. PacSun has been selling surfer clothing for decades, and they carry all the major brands like Quicksilver, Billabong, Ezekiel, and On the Byas. These tanks are just plain, cotton tanks that usually have retro looking patterns or colors. They're priced from about $10 to $40.

Depending upon where you live, you can also buy tank tops directly from a Quicksilver shop. The Quicksilver boutiques carry a wider selection of Quicksilver product than you will find in general surf shops. In addition to casual cotton tanks, the Quicksilver stores all carry rash guards to wear underneath of your wetsuit. Tanks and rash guards at Quicksilver will run you from $20 to $50

Tank Tops for Guys With Ironic Mustaches

If you are making a fashion statement with your tank top, then you should probably check out the American Apparel. American Apparel has a huge selection of men's tank tops. You can find plain cotton tanks in 23 colors, tanks with stripes, tanks with contrasting details, tanks with pockets, and a variety of fits from tight to oversized. American Apparel even sells novelty tanks, including one that changes color with your body temperature like Hypercolor shirts from the early '90s and another tank called a Viscose Sexuali Tank. This is definitely the place for you if you need more Sexuali Tank in your life. The American Apparel men's tanks cost between $17 and $32.

Though they don't have such a huge selection as the American Apparel, the Urban Outfitters also regularly carries men's tank tops. You'll find a bigger selection during warmer months, but during cool months you can still find tanks in the underwear section. Currently, they are selling a gold colored mesh tank with a matching pair of briefs for $32.
