Where to Buy White Tights

By Selena Kohng , last updated August 15, 2011

White is the new black when it comes to tights and leggings. As a carryover from last year's hot fall trend, this year you'll find white tights more widely available. Fashion experts recommend pairing them with dresses and knits in neutral colors like caramel, gray, and taupe to achieve a soft, flowy aesthetic and to avoid a schoolgirl look. Also reach for opaque tights (though sheer is acceptable if it's patterned), and consider varying shades of cream as well. So where to start your search for the perfect pair? Look to the recommended stores and vendors below.

Opaque Tights

Tights (and footless tights, for that matter) can vary in saturation and opacity. HUE, the bestselling hosiery brand, offers its Super Opaque Footless Control Top Tight in four colors, white being one of them. Hue.com sells it for $13.50 for one or $22 for two, a smart way to stock up for winter. UK-based fashion retailer Asos sells a basic, reliable pair, the 80 Denier Winter White Opaque Tight, for a mere $8.62 on asos.com in sizes small, medium, and large. For a pair of luxe legwear, try Falke's soft merino wool-blend tights, available in S/M or M/L sizes.

For a bit of texture and shine, visit Amazon where you can purchase the Danskin Shimmery Footed Tight in white for $12; sizes range between A-D with a sizing chart available on the website. Also available at Amazon is the Capezio brand, a favorite among dancers and ballerinas. The Ultra Soft line features Tactel yarn, which is specially designed to be flexible and comfortable. The Ultra Soft Transition Tight is a saturated opaque style, retailing for $11-$12 depending on size (Small/Medium, Large/XLarge, and XXLarge). It also includes an opening on the bottom of the foot for the option of pulling over the foot and creating a footless tight or even a capri style.

Patterned Tights

A patterned tight in white or cream helps break up the block color and perhaps the severity of the hue. Experts warn against going overboard with the patterns, however, and be sure to choose a subtle design. Turn to discount fashion stores like Forever 21 or H&M for a no-harm, no-foul approach; prices are so low (usually under $10) that you won't lose much for the fashion risk. Forever 21's Shell Knit Tights, $5.80, feature a subtle, delicate shell repeat pattern in cream. The Herringbone Knit TIghts, $4.50, offer a loose herringbone weave, but be aware that your natural skin tone will show through easily. The Mesh Burst Tights, $6.80, are see-through with a star-like pattern and is available in both oatmeal and cream, among other colors.

Footless Tights

Footless tights are also widely available, and versatile; they can pass as leggings and be worn with flats, or paired with booties for the appearance of full tights. Check your local department store; Kohl's carries the Candies Brand, which offers footless tights in opaque and floral patterned versions. Target carries Xhilaration's Footless Tights in True White for a mere $5, with the added benefit of checking stock at your local store through the website.
