Where to Find Great Vest for Kids

By Sarah Brodsky , last updated December 25, 2011
Finding great vests for kids is on many parents' to-do lists when the weather turns chilly, especially if their kids don't like coats and jackets. Some kids object to the long sleeves and puffy bodies of winter coats, either because they find them uncomfortable or because they think winter coats aren't "cool." Those kids might take off a bulky coat as soon as they get out the door. Parents often discover that vests are a good compromise: they provide warmth, and kids are actually willing to wear them. Vests aren't appropriate for every kind of weather, but they can be very comfortable on mild autumn and spring days. This article reviews some great places to find kids' vests.

Lands' End

Lands' End sells warm kids' vests in bold styles. For boys, there's the Down Vest, which comes in six colors. The Down Vest closes in the front with snaps and features snap cargo pockets that are just right for keeping hands warm. It's suitable for use in temperatures between 15 and 40 degrees. This vest costs $19.99, and monogramming is available for an extra $6.00. Both boys and girls will love the Fleece Vest, which is extra soft and comes in six colors. It zips down the front and has two zip pockets, too. This one sells for $29.50 and can also be monogrammed.

Gap

Gap's Faux Fur Puffer Vest would make a trendy gift for a fashion-conscious girl. Its color is chocolate raspberry, and it's decorated with ample faux fur on the hood. Parents will be happy to know that this 100% polyester vest is machine washable; it's also water resistant, which is a big plus on cool rainy days. Gap recommends using the pocket to hold an MP3 player, although naturally girls could store any similar-sized toy there instead. The vest sells for $49.99.

The North Face

Girls who appreciate sports more than fur trimming might prefer the Aconcagua Vest from the North Face. This vest features down insulation under a smooth nylon exterior. The vest is water resistant and has two zip pockets. Choose from white, black, purple, and pink. A boys' version of the vest is available in graphite gray and black. This vest is priced at $79.00.

Eddie Bauer

Eddie Bauer's Classic Down Vest is built to keep boys warm during outdoor games or team practices. The nylon body is water-repellent, and the collar and zip pockets are lined. This vest comes in olive green, yellow, and navy blue; it costs $24.99. And check out the First Ascent Downlight Vest for girls. This vest has a water-repellent nylon shell and gets its warmth from premium European goose down. A zipper in the front closes the vest, and the two zip pockets are comfortable for hand-warming because of their tricot lining. Eddie Bauer states that girls can keep a cell phone in the pockets. Techie girls are sure to approve of that suggestion! (Others will find the pockets just as useful for ponytail holders, calculators, and toys.) The available colors are black, citrus, cyan blue and light berry. The First Ascent Downlight Vest costs $59.95.
