Choosing a Costume

Thanks to the marketing prowess of Disney many young girls are entranced with princesses in general and sometimes a very specific princess. They may want a Cinderella, Snow White or Belle dress specifically. When choosing a princess costume it is important to understand the preferences of the child who will be playing with the costume so the correct outfit is purchased. If a child is interested in a very specific princess become familiar with the costume to understand the color and cut of the dress. For example Belle wears a yellow gown, Sleeping Beauty wears pink and Cinderella wears blue. Determine what accessories are needed to complete the outfit. With a proper understanding of the way that princess normally dresses a costume can be created even when the specific dress is not available.

Check the cut and fasteners on the dress to understand how it is worn. Some costumes are tied on and this will require help from and adult when being used. Other dresses are complete dresses with Velcro clasps to secure the dress as needed. Determine what accessories are included with the costume. Many princess costumes will have gloves, a tiara or magic wand. If no accessories are included these can be purchased separately. Shoes are often not included but the addition of some ‘glass’ slippers or princess shoes will complete any outfit.

Determine the correct size for the child. Dress up clothes should be purchased at least two sizes too large as they may be worn over clothes and this will allow the child to use the costume for a longer time as they grow.

Princess costumes have become very popular in the last several years and there are many online merchants who have a line of princess costumes for all ages. Some of these merchants specialize in costumes in general while others have more generalized children’s merchandise. If possible utilize a company that you have done business with in the past or that has been recommended by a friend. Sites such as Amazon or Ebay are excellent places to start as they have a wide variety of merchants and a built in quality review process. Read all information available on the website to thoroughly understand shipping costs, return policies and customer service processes. Shopping online is often more convenient than going to a store, but can also be more expensive when shipping is added to the price of the costume. If there is a time constraint shopping online may not be the best choice, as the costume may not arrive in time.

Costume Shops and Specialty Stores

The most obvious place to shop for princess costumes is a local Disney store. Disney will have princess costumes specific to the many princesses they have created over the years available all year long. Costume stores are also a good place to look during October. Many Halloween stores are in business for only October and early November but they usually have a good choice of princess costumes. Some cities may have costume stores that cater to the local theatre industry that will be open all year. More general stores that have toys and dress up clothes will have princess dresses also. Examples include Target or Wal Mart. Another specialty store to check is a bridal store, particularly when they are having a sale. These stores often carry a supply of flower girl and bridesmaid dresses that are better made than standard costumes. Second hand stores can also provide options. Often these shops have a supply of prom dresses and fancy dresses that can be cut down to the right size to fit a child. These dresses will also be better made than standard costumes and have the advantage of being more unique. Add a tiara, long gloves, sparkly shoes and perhaps a magic wand and a princess costume is created.

Purchasing a princess costume is an excellent way to encourage a young girl to use her imagination when playing. Adding accessories such as a tiara and shoes will make the outfit complete and help her feel like a true princess.
