Your Guide to Men's Facial Hair Styles

By Erik Neilson , last updated October 3, 2011
For men who are interested in growing facial hair, choosing a style can be rather difficult. The fact is that there are a variety of different facial hair styles to choose from, each of which offers its own unique look and feel. Choosing the style of facial hair that is right for you may not be easy, but it doesn’t have to be impossible. The following guide should help to inform you about different styles of facial hair, so you can make an educated decision about which style you would like to embrace.

Mustache

The mustache is one of the most well-known types of facial hair, and it can be quite effective when pulled off correctly. Typically, a mustache is worn directly below the nose and follows the length of the lip. Depending upon what style you are interested in, there are a variety of different types of mustaches to choose from. Handlebar and pencil styles are two popular examples. Growing a mustache is ideal for those individuals that want to have facial hair but have a hard time growing a beard.

Full Beard

The full beard is one of the easiest types of facial hair styles for most people to pull off, for a variety of reasons. For one, growing a full beard typically doesn’t require extreme precision when it comes to shaving, and it allows you to go without manicuring for a long period of time before any work is necessary. Depending upon your style, you can grow a full beard to many different lengths. These range from short and well-trimmed to large and bushy. The one downside to attempting to grow a full beard is that many people have trouble with hair growth past a certain point. For those who cannot grow a beard of great length, short and well-manicured beards are usually recommended.

Goatee

Growing a goatee is a great option for people who want more than a simple mustache, yet also don’t want to attempt to grow a full beard. Typically, a goatee is a square of facial hair that covers a good amount of one’s chin. With that said, there are a variety of different types of goatees to work towards growing, some of which are far more small and trim than others. When choosing a goatee style, be sure to take into consideration whether or not you are able to pull off growing thick facial hair. Those who are not may want to consider goatees that are more low-key. These are typically rather easy to grow.

Sideburns

Sideburns are strips of facial hair that extend down from the bottom of the hair on the side of the face (hence the name). While sideburns can be effective when pulled off correctly, they simply don’t look right on certain people, often as a result of facial shape. When attempting to grow sideburns, be sure to start small at first, as you can always grow larger sideburns down the road if you see fit. Avoid excessive sideburns at all costs, because these can be very unattractive.
