How Much Money Does the Average Teenager Spend?

The average teenager spends $9,626.76 per year. This number is based on total spending by and for teens of $258.7 billion, divided by 26,873,000 teenagers in the United States. Teens get 62 percent of their income from their parents.

The majority of teenage spending goes towards food and clothing, constituting 42 percent of overall expenditures. This is the first time teens spent as much on food as they did on clothing. Twenty-six percent of teenage girls and 47 percent of teenage boys preferred online shopping; these numbers are higher than in previous years. The average income for teens is $2,767 for those in the 12- to 14-year-old range, and $4,923 for teens between 15 and 17 years old.
