It takes approximately 45 to 60 minutes to grill whole potatoes, depending on the type and size being grilled. Grilling whole sweet potatoes or yams takes about 35 to 40 minutes. For best results, tightly wrap whole potatoes in aluminum foil and place them over indirect heat.
Potatoes and sweet potatoes can also be cut into 1/2-inch slices or thick wedges and seasoned with vegetable or olive oil, salt, pepper, garlic, spices and chopped fresh or dried herbs before grilling. For direct grilling, it takes approximately four to six minutes per side over indirect heat. When grilling seasoned sliced potatoes in a foil packet over indirect heat, the cooking time is approximately 20 to 25 minutes.
