The oldest active brewery still in America, D.G. Yuengling & Son, started brewing beer back in 1829 in Pottsville, Pa. David Yuengling was the founder of D.G. Yuengling & Son and his company is still in family hands as of 2014. The original site in Pottsville has aging cellars that were carved deep into the rocky hillside where the brewery is located. When prohibition hit the United States, D.G. Yuengling & Son stayed alive by selling de-alcoholized beer or what they called "near beer" as well as other dairy products.

The first American brewery to sell beer in cans was the G. Krueger Brewing Company of Newark, N.J. in 1935. The company sold beer in steel cans at a time when only 25 percent of beer was packaged in bottles and kegs. (As of 2014, 90 percent of American beer is packaged in bottles and cans.) One popular brand, Pabst Blue Ribbon, which was founded in the late 1800s, is still sold today.
