Dr. Pepper is manufactured by the Coca Cola Company. Charles Alderton created the soft drink in the 1880s in Waco, Texas. The first official sale of Dr. Pepper began in 1885, one year before the introduction of Coca-Cola.
Known for its unique taste, Dr. Pepper is advertised as containing "23 different flavors." Like most soda products created at the time, it was originally sold as an energy-boosting drink.
The product was introduced nationally in 1904, and as of 2014, it is sold in various countries throughout the world. Variations include diet, cherry, cherry-vanilla and caffeine-free Dr. Pepper. Some markets sell Dr. Pepper made with real sugar instead of high-fructose corn syrup.
