Full Answer

The name Bosnia is derived from the full name of the country, Bosnia and Herzegovina, which is named after the two regions of the country that have the same names. Bosnia covers about four-fifths of the country in the north, while Herzegovina occupies the south part. The country is mountainous, encompassing parts of the Dinaric Alps, and there, nearly half of the country's land is covered by forest.

The capital city of Bosnia and Herzegovina is Sarajevo, which is located in the central-eastern part of the country; other large cities include Zenica, Banja Luka, Mostar and Tuzla. It was an integral part of the Kingdom of Yugoslavia and then later the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia until the country claimed independence in 1992. After the country, which was an important economic and military part of Yugoslavia, left the republic, the Bosnian War followed and raged for 3 years.
