The core of Russian culture began in Eastern Europe around the Dnieper River. In the third century, the Mongols conquered much of Asia and Eastern Europe, including Russia. However, as Mongol power waned during the 15th century, the Russian czars in Moscow began a campaign of colonialism, eventually pushing their empire all the way across Eurasia and onto the North American continent. The Americans purchased Alaska in 1867, pushing Russia back onto Eurasia alone. Because of its large size, Russia borders many countries, including Azerbaijan, Belarus, China, Estonia, Finland, Georgia, Kazakhstan, North Korea, Latvia, Lithuania, Mongolia, Norway, Poland and Ukraine.
