The Soviet communist system collapsed between 1989 and 1991. While under Soviet control, trade and information from other counties were restricted. The USSR also restricted emigration by not allowing residents to leave the Eastern Bloc. Even though there were stiff punishments, thousands of people fled the Eastern Bloc through East Germany to the West.
