What Is the National Bird of Canada?

According to the Orillia Packet and Times, Canada has no national bird as of 2011. The Canadian Raptor Conservancy has attempted to lobby the government to adopt a national bird, offering the red-tailed hawk and Canada goose as possible choices.

Many in the country consider the loon to be the unofficial national bird, because it is featured on the Canadian dollar coin. In fact, the common loon was adopted as the official provincial bird of Ontario in 1994. Other provinces hold official birds as well, including the Steller’s jay for British Columbia, the great grey owl for Manitoba, the snowy owl for Quebec and the great horned owl for Alberta. The Canadian Raptor Conservancy suggested that the national bird not be one already chosen by a province.
