Full Answer

The organization that would become the Noritake Co. was founded in the village of Noritake, a small suburb near Nagoya, Japan, in 1904. Ichizaemon Morimura, a Japanese merchant, had established a firm several decades earlier that dealt in overseas trading, and in 1876, he opened an imported goods store in New York City called “Morimura Brothers.” Recognizing a market for porcelain dinnerware, Morimura was determined to create a line of goods built from Japanese materials. Early in the 20th century, after sending his engineers to learn manufacturing methods used for European porcelains, Morimura built a factory in Noritake that went on to launch the brand known around the world as Noritake china.
