Parris Island is located in southwestern Beaufort County in the same inlet as Hilton Head in South Carolina. The Marine Corps Recruit Depot is the most famous entity on Parris Island, although the area once had a census-dedicated place that is now under the annexation of Port Royal, S.C.
Parris Island is a Marine installation and home of the USMC's East Coast boot camp. The area began receiving male recruits in 1915 and women recruits in 1945. According to the official website for the Marines, as of 2014, the base receives over 120,000 visitors per year, making it the most-visited military installation in the world.
