Q:

Where are the Philippine Islands located?

A:

The Philippine Islands are located between the equator and the Tropic of Cancer in the Northern Hemisphere. Comprised of over 7,100 islands, the archipelago is situated just off the coast of Southeast Asia and is surrounded by the Pacific Ocean, the South China Sea, Philippine Sea, Celebes Sea, Sulu Sea and the Luzon Strait. It is also located along the Pacific Ring of Fire.

This group of islands is the second-largest archipelago on Earth. The location of the Philippine Islands in the ocean and near the Ring of Fire makes them susceptible to the occurrence of volcanoes, earthquakes and typhoons. Existing in the Philippine islands are 53 active volcanoes that rank as some of the most deadly in the world. Complicating matters is the heavy rainfall associated with the Philippines that also results in mud flows. Tsunamis are also not uncommon to this area.

The terrain of these islands is largely mountainous with low-lying coastal regions. Considered part of the continent of Asia, the archipelago's neighboring countries include Vietnam, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Indonesia. The capital of the Philippines is Manila, located at approximately 14 degrees north latitude and 120 degrees east longitude. Other major Philippine cities include Quezon City, Caloocan, Davao City and Cebu City.
