Q:

What is a CFDA number?

A:

The Catalog of Federal Domestic Assistance number is a five-digit number assigned by the federal government to its programs, services, activities, grants and projects providing financial assistance or benefit to the public. The first two digits represent the funding agency; the second three digits designate the grant, program or project.

The Catalog of Federal Domestic Assistance is the only source for CFDA numbers. This catalog also includes assigned numbers for the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009.

When writing for a grant or other federal assistance, the FederalReporting.gov website validates CFDA numbers. All CFDA applications must contain relevant information and answers to questions requested by the funding agencies. If a Recovery Act-funded program does not have a valid CFDA number, the application for reimbursement or funding is rejected.
