Gloria Arroyo first entered the Philippine government in 1987 as the assistant secretary and undersecretary of the Department of Trade and Industry. She served as a Senator from 1992 until 1998, when she was elected as Vice President serving under President Joseph Estrada. She gained the Presidency when Estrada was forced from office after being accused of corruption. After her Presidency, she was elected to the House of Representatives. In October of 2012, she was arrested for the misuse of over $8 million in lottery funds.
