Q:

How is the AccuCirc used?

A:

According to Clinical Innovations, AccuCirc is a device that protects infants during circumcision. It gently crushes and cuts the foreskin with no need for scalpels or bulkier clamps. The device also minimizes pain.

The device is not only easier on infants in terms of preventing pain, but it also simplifies the procedure for doctors. It consists of a probe and shielding ring with a single-action clamp. According to Discover, it is disposable, only meant to be used once in order to prevent the spread of HIV and requires little training to use.

AccuCirc works when the device's shield is in proper position for the doctor to work the clamp. A probe is located under the foreskin, which protects the glans of the penis and eliminates the need for incision. The pressure that the device exerts on the foreskin prevents blood vessels from bleeding profusely. The device is made of plastic, but a steel blade cuts the foreskin in one movement. When the clamp is released, the foreskin is removed with a holder located in the probe.

Physician David Tomlinson invented the device in his spare time. Tomlinson developed the device because he believed that standard circumcision procedures had the potential to cause complications. Staff from Clinical Innovations and Brown University helped Tomlinson further develop the device. A version is also being developed to circumcise adults.
