Q:

Can you drink alcohol while taking Penicillin VK?

A:

According to the Mayo Clinic, alcohol and antibiotics, including penicillin, have similar side effects, such as upset stomach, dizziness and drowsiness, that can overlap and become more unpleasant when taken together. Alcohol does not, however, reduce the potency of most antibiotics.

As the BBC explains, due to the rising prevalence of antibiotic resistance in bacteria, many doctors recommend that patients focus on completing the full prescribed course of antibiotics over skipping a dose when they drink, unless specifically noted otherwise. This does not apply to certain antibiotics, such as cephalosporin cefotetan, tinidazole, linezolid and erythromycin, that have an even more severe reaction when mixed with alcohol.
